The early 2010s wouldn't be the same without Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus. It was a wild time for the music industry. Miley was in her post-breakup Wrecking Ball phase while Nicki Minaj was setting the internet on fire with her Anaconda music video. It was a paradise for the tabloids. Each week, it was either another crazy tongue-out Miley story or another risqué photo of Nicki.
It all seemed like a peaceful co-existence in the industry until their controversies crossed in a magazine interview. The next thing we knew, it was another pair of female music icons feuding because of the media. It all exploded the moment Nicki called out Miley at the VMAs in 2015. Now, over five years later, is there still bad blood between the two?
Their Relationship Before The VMAs Call-Out
Miley tweeted this photo of her dressed as Nicki Minaj for Halloween, three years before the VMAs call-out event. To some, tagging Nicki seemed like a passive call for a fight, although Miley was only referencing Nicki's song, Stupid Hoe. In response to this, Nicki told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show that she also planned on dressing up as Miley for Halloween. The internet never witnessed any evidence of that, though.
A year later, Miley told Billboard, "A lot of people wanted to try to make me the white Nicki Minaj." That was when Miley had started adding some hip-hop flavor to her music. Fate had it for the two as they found themselves in Mike WiLL Made-It's studio together, a couple of months after Miley's Billboard interview. However, a month later, Nicki revealed that a potential collaboration didn't work out. Still, there were no speculations of Miley and Nicki not getting along.
What Triggered Nicki To Go Off On Miley At The VMAs
Leading up to the VMAs call-out moment, it was unclear whether Nicki and Miley were on bad terms. The two even shared laughs when Miley edited her head into Nicki's NSFW Anaconda cover art. Nicki reposted the photo on Instagram and captioned it, "Give me one good reason why Miley made this her Twitter avi," followed by a lot of laughing emojis. The two also sat next to each other at the 2015 Grammy Awards.
But Miley said something about the whole Nicki-Taylor Twitter feud that rubbed Nicki the wrong way. Nicki tweeted this in response to Anaconda not being nominated for video of the year at the 2015 VMAs. Taylor Swift's Bad Blood was nominated for that category, and she felt like Nicki was coming for her so she tweeted back,"@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot."
When asked about what she thought about this, Miley told The New York Times that Nicki was "not too kind". She also insinuated that Nicki was jealous of not being nominated. It took only that phrase and an unclear implication of jealousy to make Nicki go off and say, "Back to this b— that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press; Miley, what’s good?" It was right after Nicki received the VMA for best hip-hop video.
Miley did not hold back either. "Hey, we're all in this industry. We all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate s—," she fired back. "Nicki, congratulations."
The Truce That Didn't Last Long
Three years after that VMAs moment, Miley uploaded this now-deleted video of her dancing to Nicki's Chun-Li. Nicki reposted the clip with the caption, "What's good," followed by a heart-eyed cat emoji. It seemed like the two were finally able to casually reference their VMAs fight for fun. Prior to that, Nicki was also seen clapping and having a good time while Miley was performing Malibu at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.

But as it turned out, the two never really resolved their feud. The video clip moment was just a truce which certainly lasted for a brief second. A year after that, Miley released a diss track called Cattitude. The lyrics go, "I love you Nicki, but I listen to Cardi." Now we know Cardi B and Nicki Minaj's feud has even gone physical. So you bet Nicki didn't like that.
She addressed the track and said, "A Perdue chicken can never talk s— about queens. That’s what [Miley Cyrus] did... In the first place, she disrespected me in a magazine article for no reason." So as of this writing, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj are still on open fire combat.
